Instructing Rikishi

By "Instructing Rikishi" we mean setting up their plan for their next fight. We call this plan their Ring Strategy. This is submitted by completing the form on the Instruct Rikishi page reached via Play on the main menu. Full instructions are provided on that page but here are a few more tips:

Try and anticipate your opponent's choices. If your opponent has one outstanding action then consider defending against this. If your opponent has an outstanding weakness, consider playing against that. Try and understand what strategy your opponent has previously used by studying the commentaries of his previous matches. Does he seem to change strategy?

Figure out whether you will have a size advantage. Sizes advantages bring bonuses to a bout that may not exist against a different sized opponent using the same strategy. Can you find a way to capitalise on an advantage in size or prevent your opponent from such a benefit?

Co-ordinate your strategy. Don't use your speed bonus to focus on reactions and then not employ any Kumi or Kumi Kata.
Estimate whether you need to take chances to win. If you have the stronger rikishi consider playing safe. You could turn down the intensity and include a switch in strategy if your rikishi loses the momentum or finds hisself with the worse grip. Correspondingly, if you feel your rikishi is weaker it may be the moment to be brave. For example you could go for broke at the tachiai, selecting an extreme height and combine all of your speed focus bonus on one outcome.

Test out your strategy in Moshiai. Read the commentaries carefully and try and discern which strategies you were up against. Consider the quality of your opponent and judge how well your strategy worked.
