Virtual Sumo - Introduction

Virtual Sumo aims to be the most realistic sumo game available.  It's free and we welcome feedback and suggestions as to how to improve.  Currently the site is not fully automated and so instructions about your choices in the game must be sent to us using forms which will require you to submit passwords and receive emails.  We apologise for the fact that this may slow down the game but, if there is sufficient interest in Virtual Sumo, we will automate as much of the game as possible in the future.

To get the most from Virtual Sumo you will have some knowledge of the real thing.  Rather than attempt to explain the nuances of a sport with unrivalled tradition we would refer you to elsewhere on the web so that you gain an understanding of the rules, structure and fundamentals behind the sport.

For example there is an excellent description of the structure of sumo here on sumotalk.com :

and a thorough glossary of sumo terms here on sumoforum.net:

Virtual Sumo is played in a series of monthly cycles with Honbasho (or Grand Tournaments) every month.  As in real life, honbasho last 15 days and begin and end on a Sunday with each rikishi (or wrestler) fighting one match each day.  Normally honbasho will begin on the second Sunday of a month.  The date of the next honbasho will be advertised on the News page and will normally match any honbasho in real life (although these are only bi-monthly).

During honbasho you will have time to size up your rikishi's next opponent(s) and set out a strategy to beat them in the ring.

Outside honbasho you will have the chance to train or retire existing rikishi and recruit new rikishi.
